Wife took the kids to see the in-laws last week for Easter. I went to a baseball game. Right there I win. But wait, there’s more.
Sunny and 65 this is important because it’s rained about 3 straight weeks up here in Chicago but this day was perfect.
Rockit Bar and Grill in Wrigleyville. Sliders and beer for lunch… mmmm Great place for food and beer. Lots of tourists go to Harry Caray’s, lots of locals go to Rockit Bar and Grill. Not to name drop, oh wait, fuck it, YES to name drop. Might run into Jeremy Piven or a Vince Vaughn occasionally if you frequent Rockit.
New Segment here on Atomic Gator, Rapid fire Rich. More stories equals more funny. May stick, may not, who gives a shit either way? This is me staying ahead of the curve and letting you all ride my coat tails. (metaphor) I have no coats with tails on them. Yes that is my arm in my sun glasses reflection. You’re welcome.
Seriously, think about this for a minute, the Fourth of July is all about beer, BBQ and fireworks. Is there a better holiday? Honestly, you had me at alcohol and fireworks, and you clinched the top seed when you added the grill. Throw in the 3 day weekend and dammit you have the perfect holiday weekend known to man.
Another great part of this holiday is you don’t need to give any holiday gifts or cards. Throw in nice warm summer weather and why does Christmas get all the attention? Sorry baby Jesus, the Fourth of July is da bomb! This holiday had to be invented by guys for guys.
Lady Gaga has recently been spotted at some baseball games, acting rude, drinking and maybe even acting a little diva-ish. Who gives a shit, in my book if you’re a Rock Star you get a free pass. I could trash Gaga because she does this stuff and is a pop singer, but honestly that is too easy. I prefer to see the good in Gaga and by good, I mean bad as in bad ass. I wouldn’t call myself a huge Lady Gaga fan but I admit, I am a fan of her style. She is the star of the moment and she knows how to work it. This has been done before, see Madonna in the late 80’s, J Lo in the late 90’s, me in college, but nobody currently does it better than Gaga. Madonna and J Lo are too mature now, helping world causes, protecting the earth, saving children blah, blah, blah.
Let’s put that into better perspective for you. The Florida Marlins have been an organization fielding a team since 1993 and they have 2 World Series Titles in that span. They won their first title in 1997. Imagine that, they had to wait four entire seasons from their existence to win a World Series Championship and then followed it up with another one in 2003. They are currently in their longest drought not winning the title going into their 7th season, oh those Marlin fans must be getting restless.
Back to The lovable Cubs, still waiting since 1908 for another title. The Cubs were 5 outs away from going back to the World Seires in 2003, 5 measly outs to play for it all but it wasn’t to be as they bowed out to the Marlins in 7 games. The last time they were in the World Series was 1945 and then something remarkable happened. They had a 2 games to 1 lead over the Detroit Tigers and in Game four one of the ticket holders had 2 box seats one for him and one for his GOAT! PK Wrigley the Cubs owner demanded the patron take his goat and leave because of the foul odor of the animal. After the goat was paraded around for a few innings Billy Sianis took his goat and left but not before declaring.
“The Cubs, they ain’t going to win no more.” It’s known as the Curse and now 65 years later, the Curse has held up. Not only have the Cubs not been World Series Champions they haven’t even been back to the World Series since 1945. Here we are 65 years later still talking about the Curse of the Goat.
As the 2010 Season begins today for the Cubs of course there is plenty of reason to be optimistic because hope springs eternal and this could be the year of the Cubs or perhaps not. What makes it worse for the North siders is that their little brothers on the other side of town, the White Sox had their own run of futility halted when they won a title in 2005, their first World Series Championship since 1917.
There is one other rumor of why the Cubs haven’t won a World Series title since 1908 and it’s not one you hear a lot about. I’ve heard players discuss the game day start times as a big reason. What is this? Well their first night game was scheduled for 8/8/88 because Wrigley Field never had lights. Prior to the end of the 1988 season all the Cubs home games were played during the day, every one of them. Still today in 2010 most of the games are still played during the day, with a few at night. This is stark contrast to other Major League clubs that usually play night games and sprinkle in a few day games here and there. So Rich, what is your point, what’s the big damn deal about day games? I’m glad you asked. Well it’s been thought that with the day games starting at around 2:30pm is a bad mixture with the Chicago nightlife. The players finish their work around 5 or 6pm, eat dinner then hit the town. Just like all the other teams except the Cubs players have to report to the stadium the next day much earlier than other teams with night games. You say, well I’m sure the visiting they are playing deals with the same situation, and you would be correct. However, they don’t have to deal with the late nights in Chi-Town and early day games for 70 games or so throughout the season, they only have to deal with it 3-6 times a season.
I’m not blaming the lack of World Series titles on the fact all the players party all night every night. What I am saying is some former Cubs players believe this is a factor when you weigh it over the course of season. Hell, this theory isn’t any worse than the damn Billy Goat Curse right?
With the first pitch today in Atlanta the Cubs begin their title quest again as they start the season in first place and can only hope to be there in October when the season ends. Will it happen, who knows but I can assure you there will be no more goats sitting in the box seats and I can assure you that the Cubs will continue to be beloved no matter win or lose. These Cubs fans are die hard, non fair weather fans. For the first thing, the weather is often less than fair in the Windy City and since it’s been 102 years the expectations are not exactly high around Wrigleyville. Doesn’t matter though because fans still sell out every home game and support their team through the bad and the badder. I can only imagine what will happen when the Cubs attain the World Series Championship again. I believe the town might suffer more damage than the famed Great Chicago fire of 1871.
